MLB: Highest Whiff% on Curveballs in 2019 – Pitchers’ Edition

We continue to go over Whiff% rates from last season, as we look at which pitchers had the most swings and misses from 2019.

Most Curveballs From 2019

Before we get into the Whiff% rates from 2019, let’s see which pitchers threw the most curves in 2019.

# Team Player # of Curves Thrown
1 Rays Charlie Morton 1172
2 Nationals Stephen Strasburg 1037
3 Cardinals Adam Wainwright 1025
4 Twins Jose Berrios 904
5 Yankees Domingo German 811

Rays RHP Charlie Morton threw 1172 curves, over 100 more than Stephen Strasburg, who threw the second-most curves last year. With that number, it shouldn’t be all that surprising that Morton also led MLB last year in most swings and misses off the curve (207). And on top of that, Morton also had the most strikeouts last year off the curve, and it wasn’t even close.

One other interesting note on the most curves thrown last year: Red Sox RHP Matt Barnes, who threw the ninth-most curveballs last season, led all relievers with 664 curves.

Highest Whiff% From 2019

We’ll do two dives into Whiff% rates from last season, and we’ll start with pitchers who threw a minimum of 200 curveballs in 2019.

# Team Player Whiff%
1 Rays Blake Snell 54.9%
2 Marlins/Rays Nick Anderson 54.2%
3 Giants Tyler Beede 50.5%
4 Padres Dinelson Lamet 48.3%
5 Astros Framber Valdez 46.6%
6 Mets Noah Syndergaard 46.1%
7 Braves Touki Toussaint 45.8%
8 Brewers Junior Guerra 45.0%
9 Yankees Domingo German 44.9%
10 Rays Tyler Glasnow 43.9%

Former Cy Young winner Blake Snell, who missed time last year with a series of injuries, clocks in at the top spot. Right behind him was RHP Nick Anderson, who was acquired by the Rays in July. Giants RHP Tyler Beede, who will miss all of 2020 (should the season happen) after undergoing Tommy John surgery, clocks in at #3.

Now let’s take a look at Whiff% rates with a minimum of 400 curves thrown last year.

# Team Player Whiff%
1 Rays Blake Snell 54.9%
2 Marlins/Rays Nick Anderson 54.2%
3 Astros Framber Valdez 46.6%
4 Yankees Domingo German 44.9%
5 Red Sox Matt Barnes 41.2%
6 Angels Andrew Heaney 40.9%
7 Cubs Jon Lester 40.3%
8 Nationals Stephen Strasburg 39.2%
9 Rangers/Phillies Drew Smyly 38.9%
10 Rays Charlie Morton 38.1%
