NCAA College Baseball Weekend Recap (2/20/2020-2/23/2020)

Another weekend of college baseball is in the books, so let’s go over some of the major events over the past four days.

Arkansas Continues to Roll

The Razorbacks have had a strong start to the 2020 season, as Arkansas has won their first seven games of the season. Arkansas swept a four-game series with Gonzaga this past weekend, with potential first-round pick Heston Kjerstad playing a big role for the Razorbacks. In seven games this season, Kjerstad is batting .329, and has already hit four home runs and driven in 11 runs. Sophomore left-handed pitcher Patrick Wicklander has also had a strong start to 2020, as he has struck out 14 batters over 11 shutout innings this season.

Florida Sweeps the Hurricanes

It was #1 versus #2 this past weekend, as the top ranked Miami (FL) Hurricanes faced the Florida Gators in Coral Gables. However, one team came out of the weekend with an 8-0 record, and it was Florida, as they swept Miami in South Florida this past weekend. After a great outing by Tommy Mace on Friday, the Gators were able to take the lead in the eleventh inning and hold on for a 2-1 victory. Florida then took the game on Saturday by a score of 7-4, and finished the job on Sunday with a 5-3 win.

Louisville Bounces Back

It’s safe to say the Cardinals had a rough first week of the 2020 season. After losing two out of three to Ole Miss on the road, Louisville dropped their home opener on Wednesday to Wright State and fell to 1-3. The Cardinals were able to rebound this weekend, as they swept Valparaiso. The Cardinals outscored Valparaiso 23-11.

On a related note, left-hander Reid Detmers has had a dominant start to 2020. The lefty, who’s expected to be a top 10 pick in the 2020 MLB Draft, has struck out 23 batters over 11 innings and has a sparkling ERA of 0.82.
